First Naga Inspector General of Police, Rongsenshilu Jamir, passes away

The first Naga to serve as Inspector General of Police, Rongsenshilu Jamir, IPS (Retd.) passed away on January 16, 2025 aged 92 at Eden Medical Centre, Dimapur.

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton have expressed grief over the demise of Rongsenshilu Jamir. In a message, the Chief Minister said that Jamir was a man of principle who lived a sincere and upright life. Remembering Jamir as a kind and compassionate person, Rio added that in his demise, not only the Ao community but Nagas as a whole have lost a guardian and a father figure.

Deputy CM Y Patton said that Jamir was a pioneering officer in the police department after Nagaland attained statehood. Jamir’s devotion to duty and service to society will be honored and remembered, the Deputy CM said, while conveying deepest condolences on behalf of the police department.

The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) also expressed sadness at the news of the demise of Jamir, father-in-law of Abu Metha, Secretary General of the NDPP.

NDPP president Chingwang Konyak said in a condolence message that Jamir was known for his dedicated service to the people and the state, both as a disciplined police officer and in retirement. Konyak also said that Jamir lived a long life filled with success and achievements over the years, adding that the state has lost yet another dynamic octogenarian who served the people selflessly.
