The Chakhroma Students’ Union (CSU) has urged the additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of Medziphema to initiate an immediate enquiry into an alleged chemical spillage in the Dzümha River, following reports of fish deaths and visible contamination along several stretches.
In a representation submitted to the ADC, the union stated that unknown chemical substances were allegedly discharged into the river by certain individuals, resulting in unnatural discolouration, a foul odour and the death of fish and other aquatic species. The CSU warned that the incident has disturbed the river’s ecological balance and poses health and livelihood risks to communities dependent on the water source for domestic use, agriculture and fishing.
The union appealed to the administration to conduct water quality tests to assess the extent of contamination and identify potential hazards for downstream users. It also sought strict action against those responsible under relevant environmental laws, along with measures to restore the river’s ecological health and prevent further pollution. It further called for improved monitoring and awareness to ensure such incidents do not recur.
The appeal comes amid ongoing investigations into a suspected case of river poisoning in the Chathe River under Chümoukedima district, where discoloured water and large numbers of dead fish were found on Monday morning, as reported by Eastern Mirror. According to sources, the water had turned dark after the release of an unknown substance, causing the death and immediate decay of fish and other aquatic organisms. The incident is believed to have occurred between Jharnapani and New Medziphema.
