A total of five Wushu fighters were selected by the Nagaland Wushu Association on Saturday to represent the state at the upcoming 33rd Senior National Wushu Championship, which will take place in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, from September 21 to 26, 2024. The selection trial was held at The Combat Academy, Sovima Village, under Chümoukedima district, by the Nagaland Wushu Association.
The players representing the state are Vipu Zhimomi in the 52 kg category, Mankho T Konyak in the 56 kg category, Nupa Kiho in the 60 kg category, Lichonthung Odyuo in the 65 kg category, and Yoto Chizo in the 70 kg category. Notably, these fighters are among the best in Nagaland, with Yoto Chizo winning the gold medal in the 70 kg category, Nupa Kiho securing a silver medal in the 60 kg category, and Vipu Zhimomi earning a silver medal in the 52 kg category at the recent Northeast Olympic Games held in Nagaland.
The team will be led by Neizouvotuo Khusoh as the team coach, with RK Shanti Kumar Singh as the assistant coach, and Azhove Resu as the team manager for the championship. The selected players will now undergo intensive training at The Combat Academy before departing for Dehradun for the national championship.
Earlier, NWA General Secretary Akhozo, speaking during the selection trials, urged the players to give their best, noting that qualifying for the national games is within reach if they can progress to the quarterfinals of the national championship. He assured that the association will put in its best efforts to support the players and encouraged them to make the most of the training camp. The General Secretary also assured that President and MLA Kudecho Khamo will provide any necessary support, adding that winning a medal should be the target for each player.
