Mokokchung, August 10 (MTNews): A man was left injured after being swept away by flash floods while landslides triggered by heavy rains damaged houses, vehicles and other properties in and around Mangkolemba Town, an official said. The incident happened around midnight to 3:00 AM Wednesday, he said.
Lankonsen Tsanglao, ADC Mangkolemba told Mokokchung Times that incessant and heavy rains led to flash floods and landslides in many areas in and around Mangkolemba which has left the town completely cut off on Wednesday adding that the administration, PWD and locals were working to reopen the roads.
Along the Mangkolemba – Mongchen Road, about 2KM from the town where a labor camp had been set up by a construction company was completely destroyed while a local who was camping near the camp was swept away for about 15 meters that left him injured, the ADC said.
A car belonging to a local was also swept away by the deluge and construction machinery were also covered by the landslides, he said. The ADC also said that along the Mangkolemba – Longtho road, a culvert bridge was damaged making it unusable even for light vehicles.
The PWD (Roads and Bridges) under the supervision of Executive Engineer (PWD) was trying to fix the culvert bridge temporarily using logs, he said, adding that the administration’s priority was to reopen the roads by today itself.
A ‘kutcha’ house in the town was also swept away by the deluge which then hit another house leaving it partially damaged. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, the ADC informed. He also said that the damage assessment caused by the flash flood is still being done.
When Mokokchung Times inquired about disaster management agencies in Mangkolemba, the ADC said that the personnel were not in station.
Many locations along the Mangkolemba – Khar road have also been affected by landslides. The Khar Village Council has been working on a war-footing to clear the road, the ADC said.
ADC Mangkolemba issues travel advisory
Meanwhile, the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Mangkolemba, T. Lankonsen Tsanglao has on Wednesday issued a public travel advisory. “In view of the deplorable condition of Ngisameyong slab bridge of Longnak to Mangkolemba road connecting Mangkolemba town caused due to incessant rainfall and in the interest of public safety, all heavy vehicular movements in the said bridge is restricted till such time the bridge is repaired and safe for commuting or an alternate route is arranged,” the advisory read. It also said that the advisory comes into immediate effect till further orders.
