The Forum for Naga Reconciliation (FNR) and representatives of 12 Naga tribal organizations have issued a strong call for immediate action, urging Naga Political Groups (NPGs) to implement the January 14 Treatise without delay. The demand was made in a Public Declaration following a crucial meeting held on February 18.
The declaration underscores the need for all Naga Political Groups to heed the voice of the people and take necessary steps toward unity and reconciliation. The representatives resolved that achieving Naga unity must be prioritized in the spirit of oneness, stressing that the January 14 Treatise serves as a key milestone that should not be ignored.
The January 14 treatise reaffirms the commitment to strengthening the 2009 Covenant of Reconciliation, honoring Naga historical and political rights as outlined in significant documents such as the Naga Memorandum to the Simon Commission (1929), the Declaration of Naga Independence (1947), and the Naga Voluntary Plebiscite (1951). It recognizes that Naga ancestral territories and peoplehood transcend artificial boundaries and vows to protect these inalienable rights collectively.
“Naga Political Groups must listen to the voice of the people and without exception all efforts must be taken to ensure Naga unity in the spirit of oneness,” the declaration stated.
“To actualize Naga unity and reconciliation, the January 14, 2025 Treatise must be implemented with immediate effect. All Naga Political Groups and Naga People are urged to be part of the Council of Naga Cooperation and Relationship. The Naga public will hold to account any Naga Political Group and civil society organization responsible for its failure,” it further read.
The declaration also called for “consciously harnessing and consolidating Naga solidarity by fostering kindred spirit without borders towards the fulfillment of Naga aspirations.”
Signatories of the Public Declaration include representatives from the Chakhesang Public Organization, Rengma Hoho, Pochury Hoho, Sumi Hoho, Phom Peoples’ Council, Tikhir Tribal Council, Chang Union Dimapur, Chang Khulei Setshang, Mao Council, Angami Public Organization, Ao Senden, Tangkhul Naga Long, and FNR members.
