Nagaland Assembly likely to discuss proposed India-Myanmar border fencing

Mokokchung, 22 February (MTNews): The fourth session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) will commence on the 26th of this month and conclude on the 1 March.
The proposed fencing of the India-Myanmar border and the suspension of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) with Myanmar are likely to be discussed during the upcoming budget session of the Nagaland Assembly, reports said.

Tribal bodies and civil society organisations in Nagaland, which shares 215 km of the international border with Myanmar, have decried the Centre’s decision to fence the border and suspend FMR.

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio had also said that the decision needs thorough discussion and that the government has to consult the people for a workable formula before implementation.

Sources said that the five-day budget session would take up the border fencing and FMR issues for discussion as “matters of urgent public importance.”

Governor La Ganesan will address the House on the first day, which will be followed by an obituary reference and the election of the Deputy Speaker. Other provisional programs for the session include calling attention to matters of urgent public importance, laying of the annual administrative report, presentation of Assembly Committee reports, introduction, consideration, and passing of government bills and resolutions, presentation of the Budget for the year 2024-25, presentation of C&AG reports, and the announcement of the constitution of various financial and non-financial committees of the Assembly and the panel of chairpersons for the year 2024-25 by NLA Speaker Sharingain Longkumer.

The session will conclude on March 1 with four-day sittings and one day of recess on Wednesday.
