Following the minor squabble on February 15 in Longkhum village, fresh poll-related violence erupted on Sunday evening between 4:00 and 4:15 p.m. near GPS Pongen Salang in Longkhum village.
Two people were injured in the incident, according to reliable sources, and they were treated in a private hospital. According to reports, an FIR has been filed against specific individuals and groups involved in the violence.
The violence reportedly erupted between supporters of two candidates in 28 Koridang AC when one group started pelting stones and using catapults.
One of the villagers told Mokokchung Times that while the situation is now under control, it is still ‘tense’ and that the villagers are staying vigilant. “We can’t predict how the situation will deteriorate,” the apprehensive villager said. The Village Council Chairman when contacted preferred not to make any comments in view of the sensitive situation.
It may be mentioned here that the incident happened despite the security personnel remaining on duty ’round-the-clock’ in the village. Sources said that even though the security personnel patrol the village from location to location, people still create the opportunity to engage themselves in violence.
It was, however, reported that the situation is ‘under control’ and that additional security forces have been deployed to the village.
