Mokokchung, 21 May (MTNews): The transfer of Assistant Professors from Fazl Ali College (FAC) and Mokokchung College Teacher Education (MCTE) to New Model College Mangkolemba and Wakching, Mon for a six-month period has sparked discontent among various student unions and social media users.
Following the 9 May order regarding the ‘attachment’ of teachers to the two New Model Colleges in Mangkolemba and Wakching, the Ongpangkong Kaketshir Mungdang (OKM), the Mokokchung College of Teacher Education Students’ Union (MCTESU), and the Fazl Ali College Students’ Union (FACSU) have appealed to the Higher Education Department retain the Assistant Professors to remain at their current places of postings.
A viral post on social media titled “Enough Is Enough! We Deserve Better” that criticizes the Nagaland government for transferring teachers on attachment to the new colleges “without any blueprint or preparation” is also doing the rounds. The post raises concerns about the “authoritarian imposition of hapless government orders” and calls for protecting higher education from “petty political games and selfish aspirations of politicians.” It warns that if such actions are not strongly protested, it could have severe repercussions for higher education in Nagaland.
One social media user expressed disappointment and dissatisfaction with the transfer notice, highlighting the shortage of professors at their current college. The user emphasized that this transfer negatively impacts the quality of education and disrupts the academic environment and demanded a ban on such policies and urged the prioritization of their institution’s needs to ensure deserving education for students.
Another user acknowledged the government’s initiative to expand and provide quality education but argued that transferring professors from functioning colleges would disrupt the entire education system. He stressed the necessity of a sufficient number of qualified teaching staff in every department to deliver quality education to students.
A student urged the “separation of politics from the education system,” expressing sadness over the “mindless transfer of teachers.” He advocated for the return of their teachers.
Echoing similar sentiments, another student expressed disappointment with the transfer of teaching faculties, stating that the new education system requires more guidance and mentorship. The student believes that taking away their teachers is unfair to both the students and the institution.
Overall, the students and unions are united in their opposition to the transfer of Assistant Professors, citing concerns about the quality of education, disruption to the academic environment, and the need for qualified teaching staff. They call for the “protection of higher education in Nagaland” and urge the government to reconsider its decision.
