The Tzürangkong Students’ Conference (TKM) on Tuesday staged a peaceful procession demanding immediate action by the concerned authority on the shortage of teachers in all the government schools of Tzürangkong range.
The TKM President, Imlisunep, who was leading the protest, said that over the past few years, the students’ body has appealed to the Education Department as well as the Government of Nagaland regarding the inadequate number of teachers in the area; however, he said, their demands were met with “nothing but a cold attitude by the department.”
According to TKM, the 9 government schools in the range recorded an enrolment of 778 students and that there was a shortage of 14 teachers to teach Math, Science, Language and Hindi subjects.
“If the State Government is really focusing on quality education, then can we term the shortage of teachers as quality education?” he asked.
He added that many teachers have been transferred out from the areaand no replacement have been deployed till now.“There are more transfers that have been issued to teachers with no replacements up to this point,” he said.
TKM also stated that the numerous activities, training, and programs conducted by the department “are of no significance when the implementers have to struggle and cross their lines to make up for teacher shortages in their schools to complete basic tasks.”
The TKM president said that it would take up“diverse steps until the matter is looked into and immediate requirements are addressed and fulfilled.”
The student body also petitioned the Principal Director of School Education to grant full-fledged status to GHS Tzürangkong citing the reason that it is the only high school in the entire range that serves the educational needs of more than 20 surrounding villages and has produced laudable academic achievement, including a state topper who ranked fifth in the 2015 HSLC Examination.
Earlier in the day, around 500 students from various Tzürangkong Range Government schools marched from Watiyim village gate to Moayimti village junction and then submitted a representation to the Principal Director of School Education, Nagaland, Kohima through the Border Magistrate Tzürangkong.
