The drug menace is a serious problem in Nagaland. The Mokokchung Superintendent of Police’s report that 1 in every 4 individuals in the state is either addicted to or abusing drugs is alarming and a very serious concern. The urgency of tackling the issue collectively, as echoed by Hikali Achumi, is felt. She highlighted the multifaceted causes behind drug addiction, including peer influence, family status, financial problems, social media influence, and home environment. Achumi is also right when she said that drug addiction should be viewed as a sickness requiring rehabilitation and care, rather than a mere offense subject to penalties.

To control the drug menace in Mokokchung, a collaborative effort is needed from the government, law enforcement agencies, churches, civil society organizations, and individuals. As stated by the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Chumlamo Humtsoe, there is a need for more detox and rehabilitation centers, and individuals struggling with drug addiction should be viewed as needing help rather than being punished.

While there are experts and trained individuals who are qualified to suggest measures to control drug menace in Mokokchung, it is felt that one of the most potent tools is to address the underlying causes of drug abuse, such as poverty, unemployment, and social isolation. This may involve implementing economic development programs, providing employment opportunities and social services, and creating safe and supportive communities. Raising awareness and education, access to treatment and rehabilitation, strengthening law enforcement, and collaboration between stakeholders are all equally important but we can’t solve thisproblem without addressing the underlying causes.
