The Government High School (GHS) Chetheba, Phek celebrated its 50th anniversary on Tuesday at the Local Ground, Chetheba. The event was graced by Advisor for School Education and SCERT, Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, who highlighted the importance of education brought by American missionaries, which helped Nagaland achieve the third highest literacy rate in India.
Dr. Yhome acknowledged the pioneers and elders who embraced both Christianity and education, emphasizing that Nagas have made significant investments in learning. He noted the wealth of parents is reflected in their commitment to their children’s education. Highlighting GHS Chetheba’s potential, he said the area, with six high schools and over 15,000 residents, deserves a Higher Secondary School, especially given the challenges of admission in Kohima.
However, he expressed concern over low enrolment at GHS Chetheba compared to nearby private schools, many of which lack qualified teachers unlike government schools. Dr. Yhome called for sincerity and dedication from government teachers and urged the community to support the school. He also proposed merging the primary school with the high school to rationalize resources and encouraged monitoring teacher attendance and reporting shortages, assuring government action.
Guest of Honour Kudecho Khamo, Advisor for CAWD and Taxes, paid tribute to the school’s pioneers and supported upgrading GHS Chetheba to a Higher Secondary School. He emphasized the importance of quality education and urged society, the church, and individuals to work together in nurturing the school. Khamo also addressed social issues like substance abuse and the high unemployment rate, urging students to dream big, pray, and work hard.
School history was presented by Nuzota Swuro, Chairman of Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency and former MLA, who honoured past leaders and urged current generations to protect the school. Greetings were delivered by Vepozoyi Theyo, President of Chokri Area Public Organisation, who called for unity and reiterated the need for the school’s upgrade.
Chothazo Nienu, Assistant Professor at Pfutsero Government College, spoke on behalf of the alumni. The event included cultural presentations by students and staff from various schools, including folk songs, dances, and choral pieces. The Golden Jubilee Souvenir was released by Kudecho Khamo, and Dr. Yhome unveiled the monolith. The celebration concluded with a thanksgiving prayer by Rev. Muleto Nienu.
