“Science teachers are teaching English”
The Mangkolemba Town Students’ Union (MTSU) has appealed to the Department of School Education (DoSE), Nagaland, to either retain the sole Mathematics teacher at Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Mangkolemba or provide a replacement at the earliest. This request follows the recent notification of graduate teachers’ transfers on September 6, 2024, which includes the transfer of the school’s only Mathematics teacher. The principal has also communicated to the DoSE that if the transfer proceeds, the school will be left without a Mathematics teacher.
Wapongtoshi, President of the MTSU, told MT that GHSS Mangkolemba has been facing several challenges. Besides the impending transfer of their Mathematics teacher, the school is still dealing with the unresolved transfer of two English teachers without replacement earlier in 2023. These two English teachers were promoted to Assistant Headmasters (AHM) and transferred, leaving the school without an English teacher for its secondary classes.
“Currently, the science teachers are teaching English in the absence of a replacement,” the president said, urging the authorities to send an English teacher as soon as possible.
The MTSU president also added that despite informing the education department of the situation, no action has been taken, and the current academic year is nearing its end. While the department had assured them the issue would be addressed, no replacements for the transferred teachers have been provided so far.
In addition to the shortage of subject teachers, the MTSU raised concerns about the absence of an LDA-cum-computer staff, which was transferred in 2018 and has yet to be filled. “In today’s computerized and digitalized world, not having an LDA-cum-computer staff under a DDO is both difficult and challenging. Even the UDA and others have expressed how hard it has been,” the president noted, urging the authorities to address this issue as well.
“We hope the concerned authorities will address these problems at the earliest,” the president added.
