The Government of India and the National Socialist Council of Nagaland/NK (NSCN/NK) have mutually agreed to extend the ongoing Ceasefire Agreement by another year. The extension will come into effect from April 28, 2025, and will remain valid until April 27, 2026.
According to an official statement, the extension aims to facilitate lasting peace in Nagaland with the active involvement of the Naga people.
The ceasefire will continue to be governed by the Ceasefire Ground Rules, which were mutually agreed upon by both sides. These ground rules will be open to periodic review and amendments, with the consent of both parties to ensure their relevance and effectiveness.
The agreement was formalized on April 11 with the signing of the document by G Naga, Team Leader, NSCN/NK, and Chuba Tungoe, Secretary, NSCN/NK, alongside Piyush Goyal, Additional Secretary to the Government of India, Ministry of Home Affairs.
Following the signing, Ato Kilonser N. Kitovi Zhimomi stated that the extension of the ceasefire should not be seen merely as a victory over General (Retd.) Neokpao Konyak and Ato Kilonser Alezo Venuh. Instead, he emphasized that it represents a vital chance to cultivate a peaceful and honorable political solution to the enduring Indo-Naga conflict.
“This development is not just an opportunity; it is a crucial step forward that can pave the way for reconciliation and create a brighter future for all involved,” Zhimomi said.
