Mokokchung reported zero malaria cases since 2019
Delivering the keynote address at the World Malaria Day program on Tuesday at CMO Conference Hall, Mokokchung, Imkummongba Nungtanger, the District Vector Borne Disease Consultant said that anytime of the year, members from the Government of India and WHO will conduct a survey in the district “and if everything goes well, Mokokchung will receive the certificate of Malaria Free Zone which might lead to Mokokchung being declared as the first district in the country to be declared a Malaria Free Zone.”
He said that, in 2016, around 300 cases were reported in the district which was among the highest reported cases in the state but no cases has been reported since 2019.
Along with Mokokchung, Zunheboto and Longleng have also reported zero cases in the past 2 years, Nungtanger said. Meanwhile, in Nagaland, 5 indigenous cases were reported in 2022.
Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Commissioner and Chairman District Task Force for Malaria Elimination, Shashank Pratap Singh IAS, who attended the program as chief guest, lauded the Medical Department and the Vector Borne Committee in the district for their effort and accomplishment in containing malaria in the district. The DC also maintained that there is no scope for complacency when it comes to diseases and, therefore, “we need to be alert and carry on with the awareness programs.”
Singh further said that children are more vulnerable to malaria and all other diseases. Mentioning the importance to educate and making the parents aware, he asked the concerned department to carry out the task of visiting the households in the villages so as to promote awareness. He further said that community support is the key factor to contain the disease and said all the PHCs should also be able to treat the disease.
In the program, 3 best performing ASHAS were felicitated – Chubatola of Chakpa, Sunepmongla of Longmisa and Toshinaro of Lakhuni. The program was chaired by Assistant Malaria Officer, Khenito.
Every year on 25 April, the world observes World Malaria Day to raise awareness about the disease and to encourage policymakers and healthcare providers to take the necessary steps to eradicate malaria. The theme this year was “Time to deliver zero malaria: Invest, Innovate, Implement.”
