During his visit to Meluri on Wednesday, the Governor described the district as strategically important because of its international boundary with Myanmar, rich natural resources and scenic beauty. He said Meluri’s evolution from a Bench Court established in 1958 to a full-fledged district marked an important milestone in its administrative and developmental progress.

The Governor emphasised improved road connectivity towards Myanmar, saying better infrastructure would improve access to markets and essential services while creating opportunities for trade, tourism and other economic activities. He highlighted the potential of the International Trade Centre at Avakhung to promote cross-border commerce and strengthen links with Southeast Asia under the Government of India’s Act East Policy.

Advisor for NSDMA and Inland Waterways, Z. Nyusietho Nyuthe, also stressed the need to strengthen road connectivity from Avakhung to the proposed New Thematic Port on the Myanmar side, as presented by the Pochury Hoho. He said improved connectivity could promote cross-border trade, economic cooperation and regional development.

Nyuthe further highlighted the need to explore Meluri’s geographical advantages for inland waterways and power trade, particularly given its proximity to the international boundary with Myanmar. He said stronger infrastructure and connectivity could open new avenues for economic growth and contribute to the socio-economic development of the district and the state.

The Governor called for Meluri’s mineral resources, tourism potential, agriculture and horticulture to be developed as drivers of sustainable economic growth, while protecting the environment and safeguarding local communities’ interests.

He also stressed the need to strengthen education, healthcare, drinking water supply, electricity and digital connectivity to improve people’s quality of life. Urging government departments to work with urgency and vision, he called on the people of Meluri to actively participate in the district’s development.

Expressing confidence in the district’s future, the Governor said Meluri could emerge as a model border district that is peaceful, well-connected, environmentally responsible and economically vibrant, contributing to Nagaland’s progress and India’s engagement with Southeast Asia. He conveyed his best wishes to the people of the district and expressed hope for its continued progress in peace, unity and prosperity.

During the visit, the Governor was briefed on departmental activities, ongoing initiatives and development priorities through presentations by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), the School Education Department and the Social Welfare Department.
