Kohima, 24 August (MTNews): Governor of Nagaland, La Ganesan, has urged citizens to draw inspiration from the sacrifices of the pioneers. He expressed hope that the pioneers’ legacy of valor and selfless service to humanity is deeply ingrained in the minds of the people.

Speaking on the occasion of Dr Imkongliba Ao Martyrdom Day, observed by the Governor, along with the family members of the martyr, Kohima Aor Telongjem, Aonokpu Village Council, and the officers and staff of Raj Bhavan, Kohima, at the Dr Imkongliba Memorial Hall on 24 August, the Governor stated that Dr Imkongliba Ao was a pioneer and an exceptional visionary leader. He described Ao as a beacon of light during the darkest period of turmoil in the State’s history and emphasized his role in paving the way for the creation of Nagaland as the 16th State of the Indian Union.

 

Governor Ganesan said that significant strides have been taken recently towards achieving the common goals of peace and progress in the State. He called upon the people to renew their commitment and efforts toward realizing the shared vision of a progressive and flourishing state, as envisioned by the pioneers and founding fathers of the State.

 

Tali Longkumer, IAS (Retd.), the son of Dr Imkongliba Ao, also spoke on behalf of his family, expressing gratitude to the Governor for honoring his father’s memory. He highlighted his father’s sacrifice for the cause of national integration, mentioning that Dr Imkongliba Ao led the Naga delegation to Delhi, resulting in the 16 Point Agreement between the Naga Delegation and the GoI.

 

Tali Longkumer added that this agreement remains one of the most significant accords that has stood the test of time. He portrayed his father as a pragmatic man who revered God and believed in peace as the path to a better life for the people. He noted that this conviction led his father to undertake the immense responsibility of being the first president of the Naga People’s Convention.

 

Vice President of Kohima Aor Telongjem, Moa Jamir, and Aonokpu Village Council Chairman, Alemmeren, also addressed the gathering. ADC to Governor, Watichuchang Jamir, NPS, provided insights into the life of Dr Imkongliba Ao, while Secretary to the Governor, Rajesh Soundararajan, chaired the program. A floral tribute was paid at the bust of Dr Imkongliba Ao.
