When it comes to handicrafts, Moalong Ozukum, 36, is nothing short of a marvel. Moa, who is from Waromung village and lives in Kumlong ward, has always been interested in art, sketching, and portrait drawing since childhood and has now moved into crafting customized sofas, furniture, and numerous other handicrafts.
Moa, the youngest of four siblings, learned to craft with his hands by watching other people’s work and drew inspiration from them. He then began his business with an initial investment from his parents, which he used to purchase two machines. And with that he continued his profession, and today, after working with furniture for more than ten years, he has expanded into producing customized sofas.
“It was just last month that one of my friends proposed that we try working on sofas, and we’re still waiting to see how it turns out, but the furniture has sold well. I’m still getting orders,” he remarked.
Moa, who has dedicated his life to manufacturing such handicrafts, said that his hand-crafted sofas will be cheaper than the market rate and added that it can be customized as per the customer’s choice.
Speaking about handicraft as a career, he believes that it can offer people a decent living because of its income.
“One of the highest sales I consider was during the Hornbill Festival, where I opened my stall five or six years ago,” he disclosed.
Apart from woodworks, Moa also crafts decoration items for home with waste plastics bottle such as the peacock and the birds as seen in the picture below. He admitted that these are the most difficult ones to make.
He went on to say that he has no plans to give it a brand name or take his business outside of his home as of now.
