Proper upkeep of localities through community participation is aptly demonstrated by Salangtem Ward of Mokokchung town. Under the initiative of the Salangtem Ward Yimden, the residents here have been contributing in maintenance and upkeep of public spaces within its jurisdiction. Seen in the pictures are volunteers of Salangtem Youth Union and Salangtem Youth Fellowship painting the street walls under the initiative of the Salangtem Ward Yimden. They normally do this during the month of December, and this is the sixth year that they have been doing it.
The womenfolk also contributed by maintaining flowerbeds in the roadsides to enhance the aesthetics.
Apart from whitewashing, cartoon characters depicting educational murals and caricatures promoting civic and moral values are painted with the intention of educating the citizens, where a number of schools are located.
While the ‘Mass Self Help Group’ maintains a pocket flower garden in the ward’s neighborhood, the Salangtem unit of Watsü Mungdang grows flowering plants in various locations all year long. Salangtem ward is also one of the very few localities in Mokokchung where erstwhile dump sites have been repurposed and transformed into flowerbeds.
Chairman of Salangtem Ward, Lanuakum told Mokokchung Times that the ward authority is grateful to the residents of the ward, particularly the youth and women, for always readily contributing towards the upkeep of the ward.
