The Indian Air Force (IAF) on Monday evacuated 107 stranded people and airlifted 4.65 metric tonnes of essential relief supplies to disaster-hit Longleng district as rescue operations in Nagaland entered their fifth day amid widespread road disruptions caused by floods and landslides.
The air operations, coordinated by the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), resumed after weather conditions improved following the suspension of sorties on Sunday. Two IAF helicopters ferried relief materials to Namsang in Longleng district before evacuating stranded civilians, including students and patients, to Dimapur.
According to NSDMA, the continuing air operations underscore the severity of the monsoon disaster, with road connectivity remaining disrupted across several districts despite ongoing restoration efforts.
In Longleng district, several key roads, including the Longleng–Changtongya, Longleng–Tamlu, Longleng–Tobu, Longleng–Aboi and Tamlu–Namsang routes, remain closed due to landslides. Relief materials airlifted to Namsang are being transported in stages because road access remains cut off.
The district has also witnessed fresh damage from land subsidence and landslides. Five families from Shamkang Ward and three families from High School Ward have been evacuated, while two houses have been washed away and another has been declared unsafe after developing major structural cracks.
In Mon district, relief operations continued with essential commodities distributed to hundreds of flood- and landslide-affected families in Mon town and Naginimora. A medical camp was also organised for affected residents, while restoration work is underway on several damaged roads. However, the Mon–Naginimora, Wakching–Tamlu and Mon–Aboi–Tobu roads remain closed.
In Tuensang, authorities continue to respond to an ongoing land subsidence emergency that has forced the evacuation of 49 families since July 19. Two unsafe buildings have already been dismantled, while the District Transport Office is being demolished as a precaution. According to NSDMA, ground subsidence in the affected area continues at an estimated 6 to 8 inches per day, with new cracks continuing to emerge.
In Mokokchung district, relief and restoration efforts remain focused on flood- and landslide-affected areas, particularly in Tuli. A relief camp at Tuli Town Hall is currently sheltering 19 displaced persons from nine families, while emergency healthcare, drinking water supply, telecom restoration and disease surveillance continue. National Highway-02 between Mokokchung and Tuli remains extensively damaged, with NH-702D via Mariani serving as the primary route for transporting essential commodities.
NSDMA said it continues to monitor the situation in coordination with district administrations, the Indian Air Force and other responding agencies as restoration of road connectivity, relief distribution and rehabilitation efforts continue across the affected districts.
