The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) held its 39th Convocation on April 7 with ceremonies conducted simultaneously across 49 regional centres, including the Kohima Regional Centre at State Academy Hall, Kohima. Rupin Sharma, Director General of Police, Nagaland, attended the Kohima event as the Guest of Honour.

At the IGNOU headquarters in New Delhi, Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan graced the occasion as Chief Guest. A total of 2,99,092 learners from across the country and abroad were conferred degrees, diplomas, and certificates upon successful completion of their programmes.

In his address, the DGP stated that IGNOU has attained a significant milestone in imparting education and has played a vital role in reaching the less privileged, providing opportunities for all. Sharing his experiences, he said IGNOU offers quality study materials and courses that are more than satisfactory. He added that it was a privilege to be part of IGNOU, a community that encourages learning, sharing, and passing knowledge to future generations.

He also noted that many people in the past could not pursue college or higher education due to their circumstances but later realise its importance. He said IGNOU plays an important role in bridging this gap by offering opportunities for those who wish to continue their education.

Sharma stressed that a degree is not the end of learning but the beginning, serving as a channel to keep oneself focused in a particular direction. He congratulated all graduates and wished them success in their careers.

Assistant Regional Director, IGNOU Kohima, Dr. Mayonmi Shimray, in his welcome address, informed that the IGNOU Regional Centre, Kohima, was established on December 14, 2000, to reach the unreached, especially those unable to study in regular institutions, including working individuals. He added that since its inception, the centre has made continuous efforts to extend education across the state, irrespective of caste, creed, religion, or age.

He further stated that IGNOU offers academic programmes in compliance with the National Education Policy 2020, with multidisciplinary and holistic courses that allow multiple entry and exit options.

He added that, with the aim of expanding educational access across the state, the IGNOU Regional Centre, Kohima has established 16 study centres in various districts, located in colleges and institutions. As of now, the centre offers more than 100 programmes, ranging from certificate courses to postgraduate programmes.

A total of 801 eligible candidates received their certificates under the Kohima Regional Centre during the convocation.
