The India Meteorological Department (IMD) commemorated World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Day at Dimapur Government College (DGC) under the theme “Closing the Early Warning Gap Together.” The event was organized by the Meteorological Centre (MC) Kohima in collaboration with the Green Campus Committee, DGC.
Nalnish Kumar Chaudhary, Scientist D and Head of MC Kohima, delivered a talk on the theme, highlighting the role of WMO and IMD in enhancing the accuracy of weather forecasting and issuing early severe weather warnings. He also provided an overview of the history of IMD and its role as a service provider to various agencies for societal benefit.
During his address, Mr. Chaudhary elaborated on the services currently provided by MC Kohima, which include three-hour nowcasting, seven-day district-wise rain forecasts, five-day district-wise severe weather warnings, impact-based forecasting, aviation-related services at Dimapur Airport, agrometeorological services, and city-specific forecasts.
Looking ahead, he outlined the future plans of MC Kohima, which include providing block-level rain forecasts and weather warnings, expanding the observational network across Nagaland, and installing an X-band Doppler Weather Radar at Dimapur Government College. He emphasized that these improvements would enhance the forecasting and nowcasting capabilities of the organization in the state, benefiting both academic researchers and policymakers.
As part of the program, video clips showcasing the activities of WMO, IMD, and MC Kohima were screened. The event concluded with a demonstration of meteorological instruments used to measure atmospheric parameters.
Selina Walling, Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Science at DGC, chaired the program and introduced the theme of the event. The Principal of DGC extended a warm welcome to the head and scientific staff of MC Kohima. The vote of thanks was delivered by Rakesh Kumar, Scientific Assistant, MC Kohima.
