World Soil Day is celebrated annually on the 5th December. The observation of the day aims to raise global awareness about the importance of healthy soil for food production, ecosystem functions and human well-being. It highlights the often- overlooked role of soil in supporting life on Earth and emphasizes our responsibility to preserve this essential asset in a sustainable manner for the future generations.

The theme for the year 2023-“Soil and water: a source of life” emphasizes on the precious link between soil and water which is the basis of the planet’s survival. Over 95% of our food originates from these two fundamental resources. The symbiotic relationship between soil and water serves as the foundation for agricultural systems, playing a vital role in nutrient absorption by plants. The event will serve as a global platform to celebrate soils while empowering citizens worldwide to contribute to improving soil health.

To bring about changes in the ways and attitude of our behavior towards soil, there is the urgency to encourage soil health such as advocating soil and water conservation policies, promoting sustainable agriculture, minimizing chemical use, reducing soil erosion and enhancing the organic matter in the soil so as to manage these resources sustainably.

Hence by working together, we can protect soil health, ensure food security for a growing population, and safeguard this vital resource for future generations. Let us strive to create a world where soil is valued, respected, and managed sustainably for the benefit of all.
