IMA Nagaland to join nationwide strike
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) Nagaland State Branch will participate in a nationwide 12-hour solidarity strike on August 17, 2024, from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. This decision follows the recent high-profile case at RG Kar Medical College, where the rape and murder of a Chest Medicine PG student has garnered national attention.
In a virtual status meeting held on August 15, 2024, the IMA Headquarters (IMA HQ) called for the strike in response to the incident, emphasizing the need for solidarity across the medical community. The strike aims to protest against the violence and demand justice for the victim.
During the strike, essential medical services will remain operational to ensure the continuity of critical care. The IMA Nagaland State Branch has been directed to inform the Deputy Commissioners of their respective districts about the strike.
The IMA Nagaland State Branch has urged all its branches to comply with the directive and join the nationwide protest, demonstrating support for the cause and advocating for greater safety and justice within the medical profession.
Indian Dental Association Nagaland endorses strike
In support of the IMA’s call for action, the Indian Dental Association Nagaland State Branch (IDANSB) has joined in condemning the violence and negligence faced by the medical fraternity. The IDANSB has fully extended its support to the IMA’s decision and said the IDANSB will withdraw their dental services for 24 hours from August 17, 2024 to August 18, 2024.
“It is imperative that the entire nation recognizes the gravity of this situation and the pressing need for enhanced protection and respect for all the healthcare workers. We stand united in advocating a safe working environment for all healthcare professionals and pledge to continue supporting efforts to ensure justice and protection for those who dedicate their lives to serving others,” stated the IDANSB in a statement.
Health Ministry orders FIRs within six hours for violence against doctors
The Union Health Ministry has directed heads of institutions to file an FIR within six hours if violence occurs against doctors. Director General of Health Services, Atul Goel, issued this directive in a letter to leaders of central government hospitals and medical colleges.
In his letter, Goel noted a troubling rise in violence against doctors and healthcare staff in government hospitals. Many health workers face physical assaults, threats, or verbal aggression, often from patients or their attendants.
