As stated by noted American philosopher and academician, education is the movement from darkness to light. The meaning of education can be said to be is ever evolving but the generally understood definition of education is that it refers to the discipline that is concerned with methods of teaching and learning in schools or school-like environments, as opposed to various nonformal and informal means of socialization. Essentially, education is taught in institutions. Thus, an educational institution is the place where education is imparted to students. In Mokokchung, where the first school in Nagaland was established, there is a long felt but unmet need for educational institutions that will impart education to students at par with the best schools in the state and country. Not just schools but there is also the long felt need for a college of good repute. Such an institution cannot be established overnight but considering the fact that the first educational institutions in Nagaland were established in Mokokchung, it is regretful that there is no educational institution that stands out from the rest today. It is not just the government’s fault that there are no best ranked schools and colleges in Mokokchung today. And there must be multiple reasons why that is the case. Therefore, a thorough analysis must be undertaken to find out the reasons and causes of why there are no such educational institutions in Mokokchung.
No doubt, it is a matter of great satisfaction and pride that Clark Memorial Higher Secondary School is standing today as the oldest school in Nagaland. It also feels equally great to see Fazl Ali College being accredited Grade A by NAAC. Yet, there must be more that can be achieved. There surely must be. Today, there are a number of educational institutions in Mokokchung catering to the needs of thousands of students. It is just that there is something missing in Mokokchung in the field of education. Students from faraway lands must come to Mokokchung to study – that is what is missing. Instead, hundreds of students are going out to pursue their education. It is one thing to go out for education that is not offered in Mokokchung, while it is another thing for students from other places to come to Mokokchung to pursue the education offered here in Mokokchung. There is an urgent need to evaluate the whole situation. While we crave for a top ranked institute, it is disheartening to see educational institutions remaining underutilized. Case in point, the Institute of Communication and Information Technology. What are the constraints that are incapacitating our educational institutions? Surely, there are a number of questions to be asked but who will offer the answer?
