Normal life affected at Chessore, Shamator

Due to incessant rain, landslides and floods continue to occur in the Chessore area under Shamator. The Chessore-Huker-Y Anner valley, known as the Rice Bowl for Yimkhiungrüs, has been hit with the worst disaster in recent times. The riverbed area from Huker Village, Chessore Village to Y. Anner Village, known as the fertile Canaan of Yimkhiung land, has been badly affected since April 19, 2024, with almost 60% of paddy fields swept away, as reported by the village council.

The incessant rain since June 30 has once again damaged the remaining paddy fields, completely sweeping them away, and almost all the paddy irrigation fields from Langa-ke River to Chessore River have been badly damaged by the floods.

The incessant rain has also triggered landslides and mudslides, with reports of road blockages at various locations in the region. The Chessore lifeline road from Tuensang and Shamator via Y Anner Village and Shiponger Village has been affected. The Müksük-Ke Bridge, constructed by Chessore Village under the MNERGA fund, is also on the verge of collapse. The belly bridge between Shiponger and Leangkonger Village, constructed under PMGSY, is also badly damaged.

The village council chairman of Y Rikhum Y Anner Village has appealed to the concerned department to reach out to the people affected by the disaster. Zhelo, Chessore Village Council Chairman, has also appealed to the District Administration, NPWD, SDRF, and all concerned departments to extend their assistance to the Chessore area public by providing immediate relief to the affected villages and clearing the roads blocked by the landslide.

One washed away in Noklak
Meanwhile, in Noklak District, one person was washed away by the gushing water of Ngühaiu river on Monday, July 1.

The body of Pushing Khiamniungan (30), a driver by profession, from Kengkhaio Kusong village in Noklak district of Nagaland was recovered on Tuesday (July 02).
He was washed away by water currents while crossing the river.

Rengma Selo Zi details soldier’s death
Regarding the tragic incident involving Shwensinlo Semp, an Indian Army soldier from Terogvunyu Village, Tseminyu, who drowned while rescuing a friend at Nsonji Lake, approximately 30 km from Tseminyu Police Station, Kegwayhun Tep, President of Rengma Selo Zi narrated the event through a statement.

According to Tep, Semp and five friends went for a picnic at Nsonji Lake. Around 4 PM, one of his friends encountered difficulty while swimming and struggled to reach the shore. Semp immediately plunged into the lake to rescue his friend. Although he successfully saved his friend, Semp tragically drowned during the rescue.

The district administration was promptly informed of the incident, and assistance from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was requested. After intensive search efforts, Semp’s body was recovered on July 1, 2024, at around 4:35 PM with the help of the NDRF.

The NDRF subsequently handed over the body to Tseminyu Police for investigation, and it was later taken to Kohima Naga Hospital for a postmortem examination.
