In a significant move to boost regional connectivity, India’s Ambassador to Myanmar, Abhay Thakur, along with officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), visited Myanmar’s Kalemyo region to assess the ongoing work on the Kalewa–Yagyi road section. This road is a crucial segment of the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway.
According to a post by the Embassy of India in Myanmar on X, the delegation interacted with construction teams and members of the local community along the highway. Ambassador Thakur also met members of the Indian diaspora at the Kalemyo Durga Mandir.
The Trilateral Highway spans 1,360 km and is designed to enhance land connectivity between India and Southeast Asia. India is implementing two key projects in Myanmar as part of this initiative: the 120.74 km Kalewa–Yagyi road and the construction of 69 bridges with approach roads along the 149.70 km Tamu–Kyigone–Kalewa route. These projects are estimated to cost over Rs 10 billion.
In May, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the strategic importance of the highway. He reaffirmed commitments to both the Trilateral Highway and the Kaladan Multimodal Transit Project, and emphasized the northeastern region’s role as a gateway to ASEAN trade and connectivity.
