CM Rio express concern over use of drugs among young people

Kohima, 27 July (MTNews): Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio expressed deep concern over the rising drug abuse and drug trafficking among the youth in the state. Speaking at the 36th Annual General Body Meeting of the Indian Red Cross Society Nagaland Branch (IRCSN) held at Raj Bhavan, Rio, who is also the Vice President of the Society, highlighted the detrimental impact of drug use on the young generation, particularly students. He called for timely intervention through preventive measures to tackle this pressing issue.

Acknowledging the collective efforts of the government, civil societies, and organizations like the Red Cross in addressing the drug problem, Chief Minister Rio assured that funds would be provided for awareness activities. He declared that the state government is committed to declaring a “War against Drugs” in Nagaland and emphasized the need for active participation from citizens to combat the drug menace effectively.

 

Chief Minister Rio also addressed the challenge of illicit liquor flowing in the state despite the Total Liquor Prohibition Act in force. He said, though the Total Liquor Prohibition Act is in force, the government has no authority on prohibiting individuals from drinking.

 

Governor La Ganesan lauds IRCSN

Meanwhile, Governor Ganesan commended the tireless efforts of Red Cross volunteers in organizing awareness programs on health issues, conducting medical camps, facilitating blood donations, and providing immediate relief during times of disasters. He emphasized the significance of maintaining strong partnerships and collaborations with government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and the community at large to achieve the society’s goals effectively.

 

Encouraging the people of Nagaland to join hands, Governor Ganesan called for building a resilient and compassionate society that stands ready to support and uplift those in need. He urged the members of the Red Cross to carry forward the noble legacy of the organization and continue their invaluable humanitarian efforts.

 

Both the Governor and the CM decorated nine new patrons, 2 vice patrons and also handed over appreciation certificates to various members.

 

Rio also acknowledged the IRCSN officials particularly the Chairperson IRCSN Abeni TCK for her yeomen and dedicated service for the last 30 years.

 

Akhale V Khamo, General Secretary IRCSN read out the report on the business session, including the various activities and relief works undertaken by the IRCSN.
