Dimapur, 12 December (MTNews): Indus Towers, in collaboration with Shishu Sarothi, hosted a transformative event in Dimapur, Nagaland, as part of their flagship CSR program, Saksham, on December 12, 2023. Ten deserving students with disabilities from Nagaland were honored with scholarships during the Indus Towers Scholarship Award Ceremony. Collaborating with the Nagaland State Disability Forum, Shishu Sarothi implemented this initiative to enhance socio-economic conditions in communities.

In its seventh year, the program aims to offer 180 scholarships for the academic year 2023-24, covering academics, professional courses, and coaching for employment-oriented examinations. Out of these, 162 slots are allocated for students in the northeast region, with the remaining 18 reserved for students with disabilities from outside the North-East region studying in government-recognized institutions of national importance.

Ketaki Bardalai, Executive Director of Shishu Sarothi, emphasized the educational challenges faced by disabled children in the North-East Region, citing recent WHO figures revealing only 9% completing secondary education, and 45% remaining illiterate. The team at Shishu Sarothi expressed deep appreciation for Indus Towers’ commitment to empowering youth with disabilities, recognizing the crucial role education plays in unlocking employment opportunities and fostering empowerment.

Rajender Gurung, CEO-NESA Circle at Indus Towers, highlighted their partnership’s significance, stating, “Indus strongly believes that supporting communities with CSR can make a significant impact. We are proud of our partnership with Shishu Sarothi in identifying candidates who can utilize the Indus Towers Scholarship Program for fulfilling careers through academics, professional courses, and coaching for employment-oriented examinations.”

Diethono Nakhro, State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Government of Nagaland, applauded the commendable impact of the scholarship program initiated by Shishu Sarothi and Indus Towers Ltd in 2016. Emphasizing the crucial support it provides to students with disabilities, she appreciated the company’s initiative for empowering youth with disabilities, enabling them to pursue education and aspire to promising career paths, fostering inclusivity and socio-economic growth in the region.

The felicitation ceremony, graced by Guest of Honor Imsuinla, District Inclusive Education Coordinator at Samagra Shiksha, was followed by an induction session guiding scholars on accessing the scholarship portal and relevant information. The program concluded with an awareness session on the Rights for Persons with Disabilities Act 2016, equipping student scholars with valuable insights into the legal landscape surrounding disabilities. This comprehensive initiative not only celebrated academic excellence but also underscored the transformative power of education in the lives of students with disabilities, promising a brighter and more inclusive future.

Background Note: The Indus Towers Scholarship Program, implemented by Shishu Sarothi, was initiated in 2016 to encourage and support students with disabilities.
