The usually tranquil town of Mokokchung came alive this week as the much-awaited Winter Night Carnival kicked off its fifth edition. Organized by the Adventure and Motorsports Association Mokokchung (AMAM), the event has become a cherished tradition during the Christmas season, offering a vibrant platform for local entrepreneurs, artists, and food vendors.

With 89 diverse stalls lining the stretch from Police Point to Rotary Junction, the carnival proved to be a celebration of Mokokchung’s spirit. Local entrepreneurs, musicians, and food enthusiasts came together, making it one of the most anticipated events of the year. Since its inception in 2018, the carnival has steadily grown, cementing its place in the town’s Christmas festivities.

XYZ: A Friendship-Fueled Venture
At the heart of the carnival, one of the standout stalls was run by seven friends from Sangtemla Ward, operating under the name XYZ. What started as a fundraising initiative at the Independence Day celebrations earlier this year quickly grew into a beloved venture.

“This began as a way to raise funds at Public Ground earlier this year,” said one of the organizers. “We were so encouraged by the response, and the Night Carnival has only amplified that support.” The group has already set its sights on the upcoming Music Fest in December, where they plan to cater to even larger crowds.

N.I CROCHET: Threads of Creativity
In another corner of the carnival, first-time participant Aka Kichu showcased her Mokokchung-based crochet business, N.I CROCHET. Her stall, featuring handmade flowers, keychains, and animal figures, drew visitors with its delicate craftsmanship.

“This is my first time participating in a public event like this,” said Kichu. “While I’ve been selling through Instagram, being here is a whole new experience. People stop by, ask questions, and appreciate the work—it’s really motivating.”

A visitor remarked, “The designs are so intricate—it’s incredible to see such creativity in person.” For Aka, the carnival isn’t just a business opportunity, but a chance to share her work with the community and connect with Mokokchung’s growing appreciation for local craftsmanship.

Hanbok Photobooth: A Snapshot of Korea
Adding a cultural and interactive element to the festivities, a Hanbok photobooth run by Opang and his team offered visitors the opportunity to dress in traditional Korean costumes.

“We were inspired by a similar concept at a restaurant in Kohima and decided to bring it here,” said Opang. “It’s been wonderful seeing families and friends enjoy the experience together.”

A Feast for the Senses
Of course, no carnival in Mokokchung is complete without its culinary delights. This year’s Night Carnival offered a wide variety of local and international foods, with one stall standing out for its honey-crispy chili, roasted chicken, blood sausage pork, cheesy eggs, and fermented cassava.

“We don’t have a bestseller because everything is popular,” said the vendor. “The turnout has been fantastic, and people aren’t just here to shop—they’re here for the full carnival experience.”

The Purpose and Challenges Behind the Carnival
Launched in 2018, the Night Carnival aimed to promote local businesses and foster a festive atmosphere for Christmas. After a two-year hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic, the event returned in 2021 and has continued to grow, albeit with challenges.

“This year, we had an overwhelming number of participants,” said Lanuakum, convenor of the event. “However, due to space constraints and limited manpower, we capped the stalls at 89. It’s a challenge, but it’s a clear sign of how much the community values this event.”

AMAM, known for organizing motorsports events, views the carnival as an extension of its community work.

“We’re not just about organizing rallies and races,” Lanuakum added. “During the pandemic, we distributed food and essentials to those in need. The carnival is another way to contribute by strengthening the community and showcasing Mokokchung’s talent.”

A platform for local talent
The carnival has become a launchpad for local entrepreneurs and artists, offering them a platform to connect with the community. For visitors, the Night Carnival is more than just a place to shop or eat—it’s a celebration of Mokokchung’s rich culture and communal spirit.

As one attendee put it, “The carnival brings everyone together—it’s a time to enjoy, support local talent, and celebrate the season.”

Events like these serve as a reminder of the town’s creativity and resilience, and the Night Carnival continues to grow as a beloved tradition that reflects the heart of Mokokchung.
