The Angami Students’ Union conducted an inspection today of various shops within a 100-meter radius of educational institutions around Kohima town. The inspection revealed that several shops were in violation of regulations by selling tobacco products in these restricted areas.
Under Sections 4 and 6(b) of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce) Act (COTPA) 2003, smoking in public places and the sale of tobacco products within 100 meters of educational institutions are prohibited.
The union appealed to all citizens of Kohima to adhere to the act and refrain from selling the banned products within the specified parameters.
Furthermore, the union urged upon the district administration to take proper action against the defaulting shops and ensure proper safety for the student community.
