The District Magistrate of Mokokchung district has ordered the sealing of the inter-state border with Assam from 4 pm on April 7 to 6 pm on April 9 in view of the upcoming by-election to the 28-Koridang Assembly Constituency.
The order, issued by District Magistrate Ajit Kumar Verma, comes into effect with the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct and the commencement of the “silent period” under Section 126 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
According to the order, the decision was taken based on ground reports indicating the need to prevent unlawful movement, intimidation, and distribution of inducements, and to ensure the conduct of a free, fair, and peaceful election.
As per the directives, all inter-state border crossings will remain sealed, except for movement along the National Highway. Public movement of persons who are not registered voters of the concerned assembly constituency or administrative area will not be permitted during this period.
The order further states that no outsiders will be allowed to enter or move within the jurisdiction of the constituency, while those travelling on the National Highway will be allowed only for bona fide transit.
Residents, traders, commuters, and the general public have been advised to plan their travel accordingly and avoid unnecessary movement in border areas during the specified period.
The district administration has warned that any violation of the order will invite action under relevant provisions of the Representation of the People Act, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and other applicable laws.
Polling for the Koridang by-election is scheduled for April 9.
