On 25th November 2024, Nagaland marked the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women with a series of events aimed at raising awareness and taking action against gender-based violence. The observances also launched the “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence,” which runs from 25th November to 10th December, aligning with Human Rights Day.

In Kohima, the event was held at the SIRD auditorium, with Abu Metha, Advisor to the Chief Minister and Chairman of the Investment Development Authority of Nagaland (IDAN), gracing the occasion as the special guest. He emphasized the importance of collective action in addressing the challenges of violence against women, noting that although Nagaland is often considered one of the safest states in India, many cases of domestic and societal violence remain unreported due to the stigma surrounding the issue.

Metha urged the community to work together in advocating for women’s rights, asserting that Naga society’s progress depends on addressing the challenges faced by women and girls. He called for greater sensitization of traditional institutions and for efforts to empower women and ensure their independence.

ADC Kohima, Rhosietho Nguori, shared local statistics revealing a rise in reported cases of violence, with 10 cases reported last year and 12 this year. He stressed the importance of continued efforts by all stakeholders to educate, empower, and advocate for women’s rights through various programs aimed at eliminating violence.

In Kiphire, the observance took place at the DC’s Conference Hall, with EAC Kiphire Takatemjen Pongen addressing the gathering. He spoke on the global significance of the campaign, emphasizing that violence against women transcends cultural and geographic boundaries. He highlighted various forms of violence, including physical, sexual, psychological, and economic violence, and encouraged women to come forward and report incidents of violence at the Sakhi One Stop Centre in Kiphire.

Pongen also stressed the need for increased awareness and political will to address gender-based violence, calling on everyone to contribute to ending such violence. The event concluded with a pledge to continue the fight against violence and to support the safety and well-being of women and girls in the region.

In Niuland, an awareness program was held at the Government Higher Secondary School, where EAC Niuland Kelengunuo Solo delivered the keynote address. The event also featured a talk on women’s rights and legislation by Allobo K., a Legal cum Probation Officer, who informed the students about the legal frameworks and rights available to women and girls. The session aimed to equip the youth with knowledge on their rights and the available legal support against violence.

The program was concluded with a vote of thanks by Sentimenla Pongener, District Welfare Officer.
