In a groundbreaking step to enhance healthcare accessibility in Northeast India, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (Indian Oil) has partnered with Fairfax India Charitable Foundation and the Nagaland Government to provide 11 haemodialysis machines under the Pradhan Mantri National Dialysis Program (PMNDP). The collaboration was formalized through a tripartite agreement signed in Guwahati on November 25, 2024.

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a pressing public health issue in India, affecting an estimated 1.3 million patients who require haemodialysis two to three times weekly. Nationwide, the demand for haemodialysis machines far exceeds the supply, with just 35,000 machines available against a requirement of over 200,000. For rural populations, the high cost of haemodialysis (Rs 2.4 lakh annually), combined with travel and accommodation expenses, creates significant barriers to accessing this life-saving treatment.

Nagaland’s healthcare situation is even more critical, with many districts lacking adequate haemodialysis facilities and existing centers struggling to meet overwhelming demand. The state’s challenging terrain further limits access to urban medical centers, leaving rural patients and their families burdened financially and logistically.

This initiative will directly benefit districts such as Zunheboto, Phek, and Mon, aiming to reduce logistical challenges for patients, lower mortality rates, and create healthcare employment opportunities in these regions.

Expressing her gratitude, Dr. Akuo Sorhie, Mission Director, National Health Mission, Directorate of Health & Family Welfare, said:

“By collaborating on this initiative, Fairfax and Indian Oil are not only investing in healthcare infrastructure but also in the well-being of citizens. This contribution will resonate throughout the state, providing much-needed resources to combat the rising tide of kidney ailments. The deployment of these machines will have a transformative impact on the lives of many, significantly reducing the financial and emotional burden on families who currently have to travel great distances for treatment.”

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Udit Jain, Chief General Manager (HRD & ER), Indian Oil, stated:

“This partnership exemplifies the power of public-private collaboration in tackling critical healthcare issues. By decentralizing haemodialysis services, we are committed to bringing life-saving care to underserved communities across the region.”

Adding to this, Mr. Rajesh Nambiar, Executive Director & State Head, Indian Oil – Assam Oil Division, emphasized:

“Our goal is to bridge the healthcare gap in the Northeast. This initiative is a testament to Indian Oil’s dedication to delivering equitable healthcare services, even in the remotest areas.”

Fairfax India Charitable Foundation, which has been addressing this gap across India, has previously supported the installation of 21 haemodialysis machines across Nagaland. Indian Oil’s contribution of 11 additional machines will strengthen these efforts, bringing dialysis services closer to underserved communities and significantly improving health outcomes.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Vishal Suri, Trustee of Fairfax India Charitable Foundation, said:

“We are very grateful to Indian Oil for partnering with us at the Fairfax India Charitable Foundation, contributing 11 haemodialysis machines and enabling much-needed dialysis infrastructure across Nagaland. This will help local communities in Nagaland that had no viable options for this life-saving service until now.”

Currently, the Department of Health & Family Welfare provides dialysis services in District Hospitals located in Kohima (NHAK), Dimapur, Mokokchung, and Tuensang only.
