Mon, November 19 (MTNews): According to reports, up to nine inmates have escaped from Mon district jail. The jailbreak happened at around 1 a.m. this morning. Sources have also reported that the inmates lodged at Ward-1 of the jail escaped by breaking the ward’s main door and handcuff lock chain. The escapees included seven inmates awaiting trial and two convicted prisoners.
Meanwhile, police have sent out search parties to find the escapees. The Director General (Prisons), Nagaland, also issued a statement informing that a departmental inquiry has been instituted to look into the lapses and that police investigation has also commenced.
“Appropriate punishment will be meted out to the persons found negligent in their duty and a review of security procedures in all jails will be instituted,” it said. The break was reportedly detected by an inmate who then informed the security guards.
Meanwhile, the Mon DEF has in an update, while confirming the jailbreak, informed that any information regarding the escaped inmates may be reported to any police personnel of Mon DEF or inform the Additional SP, SDPO or Crime in Charge of Mon Police at their respective numbers; 8415836319, 8974454887 or 7005051710.
