Jakhama, 1 June (MTNews): Jakhama Village is all set to declare itself as a ‘Sustainable Village’ on 5 June together with the celebration of World Environment Day 2023.

According to Kezhokhoto Savi, Advocate & Environment Activist, World Environment Day in Jakhama will be celebrated under the theme, “Beat Plastic Pollution.” To mark the occasion, the Jakhama Youth Organization has organized a series of activities, including the free distribution of tree saplings, to promote sustainable practices within the village. Recognizing the importance of protecting natural resources, the villagers aim to safeguard their rich biodiversity and ensure the preservation of the Kehorü and Tsüchorü rivers that serve as lifelines to the community.

In a statement, Savi emphasized the need to protect these rivers by refraining from littering or disposing of waste into them. The villagers are committed to preventing the establishment of stone crushers and vehicle wash facilities near the rivers, as well as avoiding activities that could harm the local fish population. Furthermore, they seek to safeguard the village’s dense jungles and mountains by opposing stone quarrying at both the foothills and mountaintops.

Stating that Jakhama Village is blessed with abundant natural resources, Savi said it makes it a potential destination for eco-tourism. As the village prepares to declare itself a Sustainable Village, it recognizes the delicate balance between promoting responsible travel and preserving the environment. The community is committed to introducing visitors to the village’s natural treasures without causing harm or destruction, aligning with the principles of genuine eco-tourism.

The declaration of Jakhama as a Sustainable Village reflects the collective determination of the community to preserve their natural surroundings and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come. They recognize the interdependence between land, water, and forests and strive to protect and conserve these precious resources. By doing so, they not only secure a healthy environment but also guarantee the availability of clean drinking water, essential for the survival of all living beings.

Kezhokhoto Savi, an advocate and prominent environmental activist, urged the citizens of Nagaland to join hands in protecting trees, jungles, mountains, and rivers so that Nagaland can remain beautiful, safe, and fresh for current and future generations.
