Mokokchung, July 26 (MTNews): The Janata Dal (U) Nagaland has challenged the State Government to organize municipal elections before the next election to the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly “as an acid test to ascertain its actual position on the ground.”

The party voiced concern in a press release about the state government’s inability to hold local body elections despite repeated reprimands from the Supreme Court.
The party maintained that providing the chance for local self-government is a matter of Constitutional right for the people at large.

According to the party, avoiding such obligations calls into question the credibility of the government of the day and that it only goes to show that the government at the top is afraid to confront the public at the local level for fear of losing elections.

“It may be interpreted as an apparent consciousness of the Government of the day that public wrath against its misgovernance is looming large. Therefore, buying time by resorting to various Administrative processes is one way to hoodwink the prying eyes of both the Apex court above and the public below,” it noted.

The JDU Nagaland urged the State Government to immediately declare the date and conduct of election to the local bodies.
