Dimapur, 25 January (MTNews): In response to the recent decision by the Central Government to terminate the Free Movement Regime, the Janata Dal United (JD (U)) Nagaland state unit has expressed deep concern, deeming it as equivalent to erecting barriers within the same fraternity.

This move, they argue, could result in disparities and hinder free flow of ideas, people, and resources. The JD (U) Nagaland unit has called upon the central government to reconsider this decision, considering its potential consequences on bilateral relations and the longstanding connections between the people of India and Myanmar.

This statement follows an introductory meeting held by the JD (U) Nagaland state unit on 25 January where state executives and district office bearers gathered, as stated by the JD (U) General Secretary, Imsumongba in a press statement.

During this meeting, the General Secretary said that significant attention was given to the recent decision by the Central Government to abrogate the Free Movement Regime, which has had age-long historical significance and has substantially contributed to fostering people-to-people and economic trade ties between India and Myanmar.

Expressing their reservations, the JD (U) Nagaland unit highlighted that the decision appears to have been made without sufficient public consultation or transparent discourse, raising questions about the abrupt termination of this established convention.

“The Free Movement Regime has played a crucial role in promoting cultural exchange and regional integration between two nations,” it stated.

Advocating for a collaborative approach, they called for open dialogue with the public, consideration of diverse perspectives, and the exploration of alternative solutions that address concerns without compromising the principles of free movement.

“We believe that through inclusive decision-making, we can find solutions that are in the best interest and uphold the spirit of unity and inclusiveness that our party stands for,” it added.
