The Janata Dal (United) Nagaland has strongly condemned the killing of Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old student from Tripura, who was allegedly murdered in a racially motivated attack in Dehradun, calling for strict and exemplary punishment for those responsible.

In a press release issued on December 31, JDU Nagaland described the incident as a “brutal and senseless killing” and said it had “deeply shocked the conscience of the nation.” The party stated that the inhuman manner in which the crime was committed raised serious concerns about the safety and security of students from the Northeast who pursue education outside their home states.

Expressing condolences to the bereaved family, the party said it stood in “complete solidarity” with them during what it described as an irreparable loss. Given the gravity of the case, JDU Nagaland demanded the strictest punishment for the perpetrators, including capital punishment, stating that such an act deserved exemplary punishment to ensure justice and deter similar crimes in the future.

The party also called for a fast-track and transparent investigation, immediate arrest and prosecution of all those involved, and time-bound delivery of justice. It urged the Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to act decisively to ensure that justice is delivered without delay.

JDU Nagaland condemns attacks on pastors, vandalism of churches

In the same statement, JDU Nagaland expressed concern over recent incidents involving attacks on pastors and vandalization of churches in different parts of the country. The party said such acts were a direct assault on constitutional values of secularism, religious freedom, and peaceful coexistence, and must be condemned unequivocally.

Stating that India’s strength lies in its diversity, the party said any attempt to intimidate or marginalize communities undermines national unity and the rule of law. JDU Nagaland urged the central and state governments to take swift and impartial action against those responsible for violence and hate crimes, irrespective of their background or affiliation.

“JDU Nagaland reiterates its commitment to upholding justice, human dignity, and constitutional rights. We call upon all political parties, civil society organizations, and citizens to stand united against violence, hatred, and intolerance, and to work collectively for a peaceful and inclusive India,” the party stated.
