Since the release of powerful AI tools ChatGPT and Google’s Bard – artificial intelligence powered chatbots – discussions about whether “robots” will replace humans have grown and amateur access to Artificial Intelligence (AI) has skyrocketed, with people using the platform for myriad reasons, from writing assignments and fake movie scenarios to sermons and scripts. ChatGPT is only a few months old and already causing waves in the business world. Experts say ChatGPT and related AI could threaten some jobs, particularly white-collar ones.

As ChatGPT technology continues to expand, concerns that AI could replace human employees have taken root. According to Economic Times, a concerned user asked ChatGPT what jobs it thought it could take over. The OpenAI chatbot responded with a list of 20 jobs that it could potentially replace.

With a recent World Economic Forum report saying that 85 million jobs would be displaced by 2025 as a direct consequence of the tug-of-war between humans and machines, these scenarios might seem increasingly likely. However, there is cause for hope, yet. The same report says that even more roles will open as a result of this shift, more, in fact, that the jobs lost. About 97 million “jobs of the future” are likely to open up, thanks to AI taking over the menial, repetitive jobs. These include jobs in recruitment and jobs that help improve artificial intelligence technology.

ChatGPT, despite its ‘intelligence’, isn’t perfect. Users of ChatGPT found that the bot can generate misinformation, incorrectly answer coding problems, and produce errors in basic math. But despite its flaws, the rise of ChatGPT has sparked debates over whether it will replace jobs. With the rise of platforms like ChatGPT, Google’s Bard, and others that can automate daily workflow, 300 million full-time jobs around the world could be at risk of becoming automated.

According to a new report released by Goldman Sachs economists on Sunday, “the labor market could face significant disruption.” Economists predict that 18% of work can be computerized and white-collar workers could be the first to be replaced. According to the report, administrative workers and lawyers are most at risk of losing work to automation. However, jobs that require manual labor and outdoor tasks will feel “little effect” from the AI boom.

Artificial Intelligence is the latest technology buzz topic thanks to the boom of ChatGPT. However, the conversation on whether AI will automate jobs is nothing new. OpenAI’s ChatGPT and other forms of generative AI could be coming to take our jobs, but it will also create new jobs. The only question is whether we are ready to prepare ourselves for the new jobs in the age of AI.
