The Department of Economics at Jubilee Memorial College, Mokokchung, Nagaland, successfully hosted a hybrid webinar event on November 5, 2024, titled “Navigating Unemployment in Nagaland: Challenges and Opportunities in a Changing Job Market.” The event, hosted by Chubaienla Imchen, Head of the Department of Economics, featured Dr Tumbenthung Humtsoe, an Economics and Statistics Officer for the Government of Nagaland, as the keynote speaker. The session saw active participation from students, faculty, and professionals, both online and offline.
In his presentation, Dr Humtsoe addressed the evolving job market, stressing the importance of embracing artificial intelligence (AI) as a means to enhance employability in Nagaland. He highlighted that AI is rapidly reshaping industries, and individuals who can adapt and integrate AI technologies into their skill sets will have a competitive advantage. Dr Humtsoe urged educational institutions and policymakers to promote AI literacy and encourage youth to explore opportunities in this field.
He also discussed a critical economic gap within Nagaland—the disparity between the agriculture and service sectors. “With limited industrialization, there is a pressing need to bolster private sector employment to drive economic growth,” said Dr Humtsoe. He further emphasized that bridging this gap requires targeted efforts to develop both agricultural and service industries while creating an environment conducive to private sector investments.
The session concluded with an engaging Q&A, allowing participants to seek insights from Dr Humtsoe on potential solutions for unemployment.
