The Government of India on Thursday appointed Justice Lanusungkum Jamir as the acting Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court. According to a notification from the Ministry of Law and Justice, Department of Justice, Justice Jamir, currently a judge at the Gauhati High Court, will assume the duties of Chief Justice following the elevation of the incumbent, Chief Justice Sandeep Mehta, as a Judge of the Supreme Court.

This appointment will take effect once Justice Bishnoi formally relinquishes his charge. Justice Jamir will serve in the acting capacity until a permanent Chief Justice is named. The notification was issued and signed by Jagannath Srinivasan, Joint Secretary to the Government of India.

Justice Jamir earned his LL.B. from North Eastern Hill University in 1988 and enrolled with the Bar Council covering Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Tripura in 1989. He was initially appointed as an additional judge of the Gauhati High Court in May 2013, transferred to the Manipur High Court in October 2018 where he became a permanent judge the following month, and was transferred back to the Gauhati High Court in 2024.
