Dimapur, 30 May (MTNews): The former President of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC), K Therie has expressed concern over the recent fire accident in East Block, Burma Camp, emphasizing the need for preventive measures to avoid such incidents in the future. The accident, which occurred on Easter Sunday earlier this year resulted in the devastation of 260 houses and left 900 residents homeless, according to reports from the local Gaon Burahs (GBs) and Chairman. Tragically, an elderly physically handicapped woman named Gulasani Salcia, aged around 85, lost her life in the fire as she was unable to escape in time. The extent of the property loss is yet to be assessed.
During a visit to the affected area, the former NPCC President noted several factors that contributed to the severity of the fire. Thatched houses without plastered walls were identified as a primary factor, as they allowed the flames to spread rapidly. Additionally, the houses were built too close to each other, leaving little space between them. The narrow roads and lack of nearby water sources further hindered the firefighting efforts. The presence of blocked and stagnant drains filled with solid waste was also observed throughout the colonies of Dimapur.
The former NPCC President highlighted that it is the responsibility of the Dimapur Municipal and, in its absence, the administration to ensure the provision of necessary facilities, including fire safety measures, in the city. The lack of such precautions has put the residents at risk, he observed.
Expressing sympathy for the victims and affected families who have lost their homes and properties, the former NPCC President called upon the government to provide just compensation for their losses.
Therie commended the prompt action taken by the Chairman, GBs, and community leaders in forming a Relief Committee to address the immediate needs of the affected residents. The presence of Randemo Lotha from the Nagaland Disaster Management Authority, who was already monitoring the situation, was also appreciated.
He added that the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department was reported to be providing drinking water, and hoped that they will also assist in providing emergency toilets.
The former NPCC President met with the Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil) and expressed confidence that a comprehensive report would be submitted to the appropriate authorities for necessary action.
