The Khiamniungan Union, Chumukedima, expressed its appreciation to the Nagaland State Human Rights Commission (NSHRC) for demonstrating its commitment to justice and human dignity by taking suo motu cognizance of the unfortunate custodial death of Lt. Pashu Khiamniungan at Chumoukedima Police Station on October 3, 2023.

Khiamniungan Union appreciates NSHRC for proactive role in custodial death case

The Commission, recognizing “the negligence of the police personnel on duty,” directed the award of compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the bereaved family. The victim’s family has now received the compensation, apart from various disciplinary actions taken by the Government, bringing a measure of relief during their time of grief, an update received here stated.

While acknowledging “all individuals and groups who came forward and showed support to the bereaved family,” the Khiamniungan Union, Chumoukedima, along with the family, sincerely appreciated the proactive role of the NSHRC in upholding the rights of vulnerable citizens and ensuring accountability of public authorities.

The Union further encouraged citizens, stating that the Commission remains a vital forum for redressal and protection of human dignity, urging people to approach it in cases of human rights violations.
