A Kisan Mela cum Brainstorming Session on Dairy Sector Development in Nagaland was held today at ICAR–Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Phek, at Porba village. The event brought together policymakers, scientists, dairy experts, and farmers to chart a comprehensive roadmap for strengthening the state’s dairy sector.
Gracing the programme as chief guest, Kudecho Khamo, Advisor, CAWD & Taxes, Government of Nagaland, highlighted the importance of scientific dairy practices, strengthening dairy cooperatives, and developing robust value chains to enhance farmers’ incomes and make Nagaland self-reliant in milk production. He lauded ICAR and the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services for initiating a structured approach to sector development. He emphasised large-scale production, breed improvement, feed and nutrition, infrastructure, farmer training, climate-resilient technologies, and addressing local challenges such as soil testing, water management, and pest control.
Dr. Girish Patil S., Director, ICAR–NRC on Mithun, Medziphema, spoke on the role of research-based interventions and institutional support. Dr. Imomanen Tzudir, Director, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, Rhosietho Nguori, Deputy Commissioner, Phek, and Dr. Pritpal Kaur, Superintendent of Police, Phek, also addressed the inaugural session.
Expert presentations covered the overview of Nagaland’s dairy sector, scientific dairy farming, and strategies to enhance the dairy value chain. Representatives of DIMUL, KOMUL, and MOMUL discussed strengthening dairy cooperatives. A round-table discussion with key experts, including Dr. Girish Patil and Dr. Sivakumar, deliberated on sector priorities.
The programme was organised by ICAR–NRC on Mithun, Medziphema, and ICAR–KVK, Phek, in collaboration with ICAR–NAARM, Hyderabad, ICAR–CIRC, Meerut, ICAR–NRC on Equine, Hisar, and the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, Nagaland.
