NVCO observes International Women’s Day
Kohima, March 7 (MTNews): The Kohima Law College (KLC) and the Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO) on Tuesday observed International Women’s Day a day in advance as 8 March, 2023 falls on national holiday.
The event was held with the global theme of 2023, “DigitALL – Innovation and Technology for gender equality.” It was also held as part of the NVCO’s two-week long celebration of World Consumer Rights Day which is celebrated on the 15 March every year.
NVCO President & Associate Professor of Kohima Law College, Kezhokhoto Savi said that International Women’s Day is a time to celebrate the achievements of women and that this year’s celebration is unique for the state of Nagaland as the first two Naga women, namely Salhoutuonou Kruse (8 Western Angami) and Hekani Jakhalu (3 Dimapur – III) were elected on the February 27 assembly election and scripted history in Nagaland Legislative Assembly.
“I fully agree with the media report that all other interested women who want to join politics will also be inspired to prove to the men that women always had the potential to win on their merit to achieve greater heights without succumbing to the call for 33% women reservation,” he said. “In Nagaland, while we are celebrating International Women’s Day 2023 with the rest of the world, we can say that the people of Nagaland – both men and women – are genuinely happy to celebrate this international event in true sense as two Naga women create history in the highest level of achievement in the state,” he further said.
Savi further stated that the event is also to raise awareness about the “ongoing fight for gender equality” and that it is a day to “reflect on the progress made, call out inequality and drive greater change for women’s rights and representation around the world.”
