Mokokchung, August 12 (MTNews): The Kohima Law College celebrated International Youth Day under the theme “Intergenerational Solidarity: Creating a world for all ages – HIV-Free” at its conference hall on August 12, 2022.
The program was organized by Red Ribbon Club, Kohima Law College and one of the main events of the celebrations was a painting competition based on the theme, in which LL.B students from the first, third, and fifth semesters actively participated and cash awards were given to all the winners.
Asst. Professor of Kohima Law College and youth activist Kezhokhoto Savi, the main speaker for the day, while addressing the youth particularly the law students, stated that the theme aims to amplify the message that action is required across all generations to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by leaving no one behind.
“It also raises awareness on certain barriers to intergenerational solidarity, notably ageism, which impact young and old persons, while having detrimental effects on society as a whole,” he said.
He stated that addressing issues faced by young people such as access to education, health, employment and gender equality has become more important than ever before, as youth are increasingly demanding more just, equitable, and progressive opportunities and solutions in their society.
He believed that when given the necessary information and opportunities, youth can be a force for positive development.
“The education and skills that young people need to participate in a productive economy should be especially prioritized and they should have access to a job market that will accept them into the labor force,” he said.
He then concluded that access to education is a fundamental right and that access to high-quality education is critical for young students.
The program was chaired by Ms. Asalie Rume while Mr. Kethosezo and Lelimthong P. Yimchunger from 5th semester presented a talk on Red Ribbon Club and the precautionary measures so as to be HIV-free respectively.
