Kohima: Man convicted of culpable homicide, sentenced to four years imprisonment

A Kohima court has convicted Raju Rao, 39, for culpable homicide of Ninaju Raj Bangshi, 37, in connection with an incident that occurred in Jotsoma Village in 2021.

Presiding over the case, Mezivolu T Therieh NJS, Principal District & Sessions Judge, Kohima, on 23 January 2026, sentenced Rao to four years of rigorous imprisonment under Section 304 Part II of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). In addition, the convict was ordered to pay a fine of Rs 5,000, with a provision that in case of non-payment, he would serve one year of simple imprisonment.

The investigation was conducted by UBSI Tsalamo Odyou of Sechu Zubza Police Station, Kohima. During the trial, six prosecution witnesses were examined, and the State, represented by L Sashimongla Jamir, Special Public Prosecutor, successfully established Rao’s guilt beyond reasonable doubt.

The court, after evaluating oral, medical, and documentary evidence, found the accused guilty under Section 304 Part II IPC.

Commenting on the conviction, Additional Public Prosecutor Abraham stated that it was “a result of coordinated efforts between the police, prosecution, and witnesses,” and he extended thanks to the investigating agency for their effective work.
