The Kohima Sumi Students’ Union (KSSU) held its 4th Biennial Conference and Felicitation Program at the Mount Olive College Auditorium in Kohima on April 12, 2025, under the theme “Empowering Youth Leadership.” The event was graced by Atoshili Zhimomi, Joint Secretary to the Government of Nagaland, who served as the special guest.
In her address, Zhimomi emphasized the importance of ethics in public speaking and event management, urging the student community to maintain professionalism when organizing events. She stressed the need to choose the right speakers for public events based on their specialization and expertise rather than their status or position.
“If I am invited as a speaker to discuss a legal subject, I am not the right person because I am not from a legal background,” Zhimomi remarked, underscoring the importance of selecting appropriate speakers for specific topics.
Zhimomi praised KSSU for organizing a combined Conference and felicitation program, emphasizing the need to limit public functions, minimize expenditures, and avoid unnecessary presentation for the guest speakers. She suggested that a certificate would suffice for presentation to speakers, promoting economical and low-budget event management.
Emphasizing the importance of digital media, she urged the student’s community to use digital media judiciously for the productivity of our society and encouraged them to organize media in a refined manner.
Highlighting the role of student’s unions, she said that their primary focus should be working for the welfare of the student’s community. She encouraged the student union to use the student platform exclusively for student-related affairs.
Stressing career guidance, Atoshili urged the student’s community to identify their strength and weaknesses, emphasizing self-management and home study for competitive exams. She said that qualifying for a competitive exam such as NPSC or other exams, doesn’t necessarily require going abroad or taking coaching classes. Instated, it depends on one’s sincerity and dedication.
Atoshili Zhimomi cited her personal experience, having qualified for the NPSC examination in 1993 in her first attempt after graduation without attending any coaching classes. She encouraged students to focus on their academic careers and consider joining the administrative service.
She emphasized that parents expect their children to be responsible and secure their future, giving their best in return for their parents’ support.
Sharing her personal journey, she said, “I was raised in a government primary school in my native village. My desire was to let my parents see my success in life and achieve their dreams.” She added that by the blessings and prayers of her parents, she fulfilled their dreams, urging students to live fulfilling lives.
