Konyak community celebrates Lao-ong Mo Festival 2024 with traditional splendor

Lao-ong Mo is a significant cultural event for the Konyak community, celebrating a bountiful harvest and the coming together of people to preserve and promote their rich cultural heritage.

Tapir Gao, MP of the Lok Sabha from Arunachal East Constituency, graced the Konyak Lao-ong Mo Festival 2024 as the Special Guest on 28th September 2024 at Local Ground, Mon. He was warmly welcomed in a traditional manner by cultural troupes, with horns blown by members of 11 wards and the beating of a log drum by the Totok Union. Later, the Special Guest inaugurated the festival by striking a gong. The Arunachal MP was accompanied by his wife, MP (Rajya Sabha) Phangnon Konyak, Advisor W Chingang Konyak, and MLA Manpon Konyak.

Observing the festive mood, with participants in rich traditional attire and cultural performances featuring indigenous musical instruments, Tapir Gao expressed his gratitude and encouraged the Konyaks to continue preserving and promoting their cultural heritage. He added that the vibrant traditional attire reflects the identity of the people. At the same time, the Arunachal MP emphasized the importance of health and education in life. He urged the gathering to strive for the eradication of drug abuse from society, stressing that it should not be left solely to the administration and police. He called upon the community to prevent drug use and protect the younger generation.

As part of the celebration, a traditional song, “Kongkih Lahha Vünglak,” was performed by the Wakching KU Unit, and a special number, “Puyim Keangphüt Hem,” featuring indigenous musical instruments, was presented by Tanhai Village. Additional cultural songs were performed by the Mon Town Students’ Union, Wagiem Ward KNSK, and Sheanghah Union Mon Town.

Tingtok Konyak, President of the Konyak Union, delivered the welcome address, and Wanshi Phongnyu provided a brief introduction to Lao-ong Mo. P. Angchai and Wanle Nekong hosted the event, and the vote of thanks was given by Y. Pongba, the convener. Other highlights of the program included indigenous games such as fire-making, spear-throwing, wool-making, and rice grinding.
