Around 11 PM on March 19, an altercation reportedly broke out between supporters of two candidates in Chungtia Village, Mokokchung. Gunfire and explosive sounds were reported, and security forces quickly intervened to control the situation.
Police officials said about 12 people were detained, several sustained minor injuries, and two vehicles were damaged. The initial violence occurred near the Village Council Hall, and later incidents were reported near Sabangya, where stones were allegedly pelted.
In response, the District Magistrate of Mokokchung, Ajit Kumar Verma, IAS, imposed a curfew in Chungtia Village to prevent further disturbances and ensure public safety ahead of the 28-Koridang Assembly Constituency by-election.
The curfew, issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, prohibits the assembly of five or more persons between 6:00 PM and 5:00 AM. Exemptions include police, armed forces, government officials, medical personnel, emergency services, and election duty personnel.
The order is effective immediately and will remain in force until further notice. Violators may face prosecution under Section 223 of BNSS, 2023. The District Magistrate described the restrictions as necessary and proportionate to maintain public order during the election period.
